Most parts of Kerala witnessed a surge in monsoon activity in the past two days, fuelled by strong westerlies in the lower troposphere level.

The observatory in Kollam and Chavara recorded the highest rainfall of 80 mm each during the past 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram and Thodupuzha and Udumbannoor in Idukki with 70 mm each.

Most parts of the State received moderate heavy rain spells on Saturday. Along with rain, gusty winds above 20 knots per hour are also prevailing across the State.

The automatic weather station in Thiruvananthapuram recorded wind reaching 59 kmph, followed by Pathanamthitta (44 kmph), and Malappuram and Alappuzha (41 kmph each).

The strong weather conditions are expected to continue on Sunday as well. The northern and central parts of Kerala are expected to receive heavy rain. The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Kannur and Kasaragod, warning of extreme heavy rainfall, and an orange alert for Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Palakkad, Ernakulam, and Idukki on Sunday, where very heavy rainfall is likely. A yellow alert has been declared for Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha districts, forecasting isolated heavy rain.

According to the IMD, rain is expected to slightly subside after Sunday. However, the monsoon is likely to gain strength as a fresh low-pressure area is set to form over northern Bay of Bengal around July 24.
