An outlet dealing both in new and used furniture near Town Hall in Ernakulam town in the heart of the Kochi city in Kerala was completely gutted in a major fire that broke out on Monday (July 14, 2025) around 3 a.m. No one was hurt in the incident.

It took around eight units and a large posse of firefighters from six fire stations – Gandhi Nagar, Club Road, Thripunithura, Eloor, Thrikkakara, and Mattancherry – over five hours to douse the fire and bring the situation completely under control.

The single storied shed-like unit was sandwiched between an apartment, houses, shops, and a hotel. A couple of petrol pumps in the immediate neighbourhood further increased the threat perception.

“We could bring things under control and stop the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. People in the hotel, which was in the close proximity, were evacuated. It is not known what triggered the fire,” said a firefighter.

The owner of the furniture shop, which has been operating for nine years, said that short circuit was unlikely to have caused the fire since he always switched off the main switch before closing the shop.

Though the shop does not function on Sundays, he had been to the shop the previous night to take some stuff and had left after switching off the main switch around 10.30 p.m.

He claimed to have suffered huge loss. He said he was alerted about the fire when he received a call around 3.15 a.m.
