At least five Malayalis based in Qatar were killed in an accident in Kenya, where they were on a holiday.
“A group of 28 Indians from Qatar were visiting Kenya, where their bus met with an unfortunate road accident yesterday,” the the Embassy of India in Doha said in a post on X on Tuesday. As per available information, five Indian nationals have lost their lives in the accident, it said.
The deceased Malayalis were identified as Jasna, 29, Kuttikkattuchalil of Venkitangu, near Guruvayur, and her daughter Ruhi Mehrin; Geetha Shoji, 58, hailing from Cherukol, near Mavelikkara; Riya Puthanpurayil, 41, and her daughter Taira from Kanhirampara, Mannoor in Palakkad district.
Among those injured are Jasna’s husband Muhammed Haneefa, Geetha’s husband Shoji Isaac and her son Abel; Riya’s husband Joel and her son Travis.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic road accident on Ol Jororok-Nakuru Road in Nyandarua County, in which five Indian nationals have lost their lives,” the High Commission of India in Nairobi posted on X.
Officials from the High Commission of India in Nairobi are on the ground and extending all help, it added.
“Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. We pray for the swift recovery of the injured. The consular team from the High Commission is on the ground and is in close contact with the local authorities to extend all necessary support. We can be reached at +254 734916532,” it added.
According to Joel, elder son of Geetha, his brother Abel has a compound fracture and needs surgery and Geetha’s husband Shoji Isaac, who works in Qatar, was yet to informed of her death.
Riya has been working with a company involved in Qatar airport maintenance. Her husband Joel is a tour operator. She joined his tour to Kenya along with the family to celebrate the Idul-Azha vacation.
The Indian mission in Qatar said it was in touch with the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC), Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF) and other community groups in Doha.
