The commuters of a Water Metro ferry escaped unhurt even as the pilot reportedly lost control of the vessel due to unusually strong undercurrents as it was approaching the Vypeen Jetty for berthing, and rammed into a RoRo ferry that was berthed in the adjacent jetty of Kochi Corporation on Saturday (May 31, 2025) morning.

The Water Metro ferry from the High Court jetty which was being berthed at Vypeen went backward by around 20 metres and rammed the RoRo ferry that was waiting to operate to Fort Kochi. No one was injured, neither did the vessels suffer damage, official sources said.

The vessel whose two trips were cancelled in the aftermath, resumed service by noon. Berthing at the Vypeen jetty needs extra care, since the SWTD and Corporation jetties are close by.

Water metro ferry services in the Vyttila-Kakkanad corridor too had been disrupted during the past two days due to accumulation of seaweed and the inadequate vertical clearance of the Kaniampuzha Bridge during high tide, sources said.
