Native Gemini app for iPad debuts with multitasking and widget support

Technology

Google has released a standalone Gemini app for iPad. The company has clarified that this isn’t a scaled-up iPhone app; rather, it’s a completely new platform built from the ground up for iPad. It supports features like Split View, allowing users to access Gemini in multitasking mode.

Google introduced the standalone Gemini app for iPhone in February, which was also available on iPads but only in compatibility mode. However, the latest release is a native iPad app with support for widgets, and it can also connect to your photo gallery via the Google Photos app.

Previously, Google integrated Gemini capabilities within the Google app to help users get accustomed to the platform without downloading an additional app. The company later launched the dedicated Gemini app for Apple devices, similar to the Android version.

Note that there is no separate listing for the Gemini app on iPad. Instead, depending on the device you’re using (iPhone or iPad), the App Store will install the appropriate version of the app.

Within the app, users can access features like Gemini Live voice mode, audio overview, the ability to understand audio files, and generate images using simple text prompts. The Gemini app also connects to other Google services such as Maps, YouTube, Drive, and more to deliver results that combine AI and internet-powered real-time information.

Festive offer

While Gemini is a free AI chatbot available on both Android and iOS devices, users will need the Google One AI Premium plan to unlock all features and capabilities. These include tools like Veo (a video generation tool) and access to the latest models, such as Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini Deep Research.

If you’ve already installed a previous version of the Gemini app, make sure to update it to the latest version on your iPad to experience the new and improved user interface, along with iPad-specific features.
