An 88-year-old woman undergoing treatment at Kannur Government Medical College Hospital in Kerala succumbed to injuries on Thursday morning, days after she was allegedly assaulted by her grandson at their house at Kandankani, Payyanur.
The deceased, Karthyayani, had been admitted with serious head injuries since May 11. The police have taken her grandson Riju into custody and said murder charges are to be filed against him.
According to police, Riju allegedly kicked the elderly woman and slammed her head against a wall after an altercation over his refusal to live with her. A home nurse who witnessed the assault filed the initial complaint.
The assault reportedly caused severe injuries on Karthyayani’s hand when it was twisted. Though relatives initially claimed she had fallen in the bathroom, doctors at the private hospital in Payyanur identified signs of physical abuse and referred her to Kannur Government Medical College Hospital.
Following medical reports and the complaint, a case was registered against Riju.
