80 colleges express interest in Campus Industrial Park programme

Kerala

More than 80 colleges have expressed interest in a proposal by the Industries department to set up industrial parks on campuses as part of an effort to attract investments, provide students an opportunity to test their entrepreneurial skills, and utilise land available on campuses in excess of academic requirements.

Department sources say the Campus Industrial Parks will also address the problem of shortage of land availability in the State. The programme will be a big boost to campus-industry tie-ups and help speed up industrial progress of the State.

Higher educational institutions with five more acres at their disposal can apply for the programme. Standard design factories (SDFs) will require two acres. The institutions will require developer licence and their selection will be done through a committee comprising top officials from the departments of Higher Education, Finance, Revenue, Local Self-Government, Power, Water Sources, and Environment.

On receiving developer permit, these institutions will get a government financial support of up to ₹1.5 crore to development infrastructure such as roads, power supply, waste disposal etc. Even SDFs will get government support. The enterprises being permitted on the campuses will be in keeping with the character of the institutions.

The committee will examine whether the land being proposed for the industrial parks are suited for the purpose and utilised for non-polluting units. Apprenticeship opportunities for students will be available through these new enterprises.
