40-year-old man sentenced to 83 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing 11-year-old girl

A 40-year-old man in Thiruvananthapuram has been sentenced to a total of 83 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing the 11-year-old niece of his wife.

The Fast Track Special Court (POCSO), Thiruvananthapuram, also ordered the accused, Manu, to pay a fine of ₹1 lakh. He has been sentenced to 20 years each on four counts under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and a three-year-term on one count under the Juvenile Justice Act.

The sentences shall run concurrently, according to the order issued by Special Judge Anju Meera Birla.

Failure to remit the fine will entail an additional four years of imprisonment. Special Public prosecutor R.S. Vijay Mohan appeared for the Prosecution. The survivor will be entitled to the fine amount as well as the compensation paid by the State Legal Services Authority.

The accused had sexually abused the girl when his pregnant wife was admitted to the hospital and he was alone at home with his own daughter and the survivor. Initially, the girl had kept the incident to herself out of fear. However, she had revealed it during a counsellsing session at her school.

Medical College CI P. Harilal and Sub Inspector Priya A.L. had investigated the case.
