As many as 29 hit-and-run accident victims in the district have received compensation through the Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme-2022. The compensation was paid specifically in those cases where drivers fled the scene after causing injury or damage.
At a district-level monitoring committee meeting held at Manjeri on Monday (November 17), it was announced that the General Insurance Council had disbursed ₹14.5 lakh in compensation to the victims of 29 hit-and-run cases.
District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) secretary M. Shabir Ibrahim, who is convener of the monitoring committee, presided over the meeting. District Crime Records Bureau sub-inspector Sajeev also took part. The ₹ 14.5 lakh compensation covered the 29 cases that were brought before the Revenue Divisional Officer, Tirur, after the offending vehicles could not be identified.
Victims of hit-and-run accidents or their relatives can claim up to ₹2 lakh if the incident results in death, and up to ₹50,000 for injuries. Claims can be filed by the injured individuals themselves or by family members of those who have lost their lives.
